Treatments for cough that are both short- and long-term have not yet received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration, the company says. But the treatment is expected to start as early as 2023, according to an earlier study that the company says it had received "very little data on the efficacy and safety of the treatment."
The Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve the treatment for the cough, said Dr. John Zook, the director of the Division of Internal Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. The FDA will also decide whether to approve the treatment for other conditions, he said.
The study, published on Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine, found that the patients taking Nexium 20mg daily had an annual cough rate of 10 percent, compared with 10 percent for patients taking the placebo. And the patients on Nexium 20mg had no adverse events. "They were not treated with Nexium 20mg," said Dr. Andrew Nissen, head of the division of respiratory, lung and skin care for the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Treatments for chronic cough were approved only by the FDA in 2002, and in 2004, the U. S. government's Health and Human Services Agency and the Food and Drug Administration approved the treatment for acute cough. The FDA has also approved treatment for chronic cough for all adults, but the study found that patients had the same clinical effect as those taking the placebo.
A second study found that the treatment is safe and effective, but was associated with a higher risk of serious adverse events, including stroke, cardiovascular events and death.
Dr. Daniel Gershberg, head of infectious diseases at the University of California at San Francisco, said he was not concerned that a drug would cause side effects in the treatment. He said the new treatment could have a positive effect on the patients already on the treatment, but he said it will be based on "new data that is already available at a relatively low risk."
The treatment, which also includes the treatment of severe acute respiratory syndrome, is a form of chemotherapy that has been used for more than 40 years.
The American College of Chest Physicians recommends that patients be prescribed a combination of chemotherapy with the antibiotic proton pump inhibitor esomeprazole (esomeprazole), and then the combination is given for an additional year. If esomeprazole is not effective, it is not recommended for more than 2 years. The combination can be given for up to 6 months.
The study was published online Tuesday in theAnnals of Internal Medicine. The study found that patients who had not been treated with proton pump inhibitors for at least three months had the lowest incidence of serious adverse events. Patients who had not been treated with proton pump inhibitors for more than one year had the highest incidence.
The study, published online Tuesday inAmerican Journal of Oncology. The Journal of Oncology found that patients who were treated with proton pump inhibitors for two years had a five-fold lower risk of serious adverse events compared with those who were treated with a placebo. The results, published in the journal, show that patients treated with proton pump inhibitors for at least one year had the lowest rate of death or serious adverse events.
The FDA approved the treatment for a respiratory infection in 1996, and in 2004, it approved treatment for acute pneumonia in patients with a cough.
The study was published online March 15 inThe Journal of the American Medical Association. The study found that patients who had been treated with proton pump inhibitors for more than four months had a four-fold lower incidence of serious adverse events compared with those who had been treated with a placebo. The study, published online April 3 inJournal of the American Medical Association. The study, which was conducted in two clinical trials, found that patients on proton pump inhibitors for more than two years had the highest incidence of serious adverse events, but the risk of adverse events was not as high as those patients who had been treated with a placebo. The researchers said that the new treatment could have a positive effect on the patients already on the treatment, but it is not based on new data that is already available at a relatively low risk.
